pamphlets
The College has produced brochures and pamphlets since before its doors opened in 1875. The earliest in my collection is the "Circular for September, 1881," published in November 1880. (Wellesley was then just five years old.)
This publication contains a brief description of Wellesley's general
course as well as its special
courses: the five-year course in
music, which was as popular as
it was rigorous, and the course
in teacher training.
Old Stone Hall, which stood
on
the site of the current Stone and
Davis
halls, was built for these teacher special students, or "T-specs."
The back cover of the circular
displays an ad for this program,
appealing to superintendents to look
to the Wellesley "teacher registry"
when seeking new hires.
The building originally known as Music Hall still stands and is one of the oldest buildings on Wellesley's campus. It currently houses administrative and student organization office and meeting space.
